ok - I'll start with : PANSY
Right then, So a astriod is said to be approaching earth, in 15 or so years...
We have the need, we could design and create the technology, why don't we slow down the astriod to Earth's Speed, then rape the thing for all it's worth? Take every peice of metal and other resources usable, perhaps turn it into a colony and leave it stationary in space?
The year after it's initial colonization, Earth swings back to it and checks in, rotates the colonists with others and starts over? - Sounds like a fine idea to me`

Actually, if there was a way we could slow it down then that'd be a pretty damn good idea. Who knows, there could even be another planet on the other side of the sun that just moves as fast as ours does, and we would never know about it.

Problem is that we dónt know how to slow the thing down

Gravitation manipulation, damn it. We need to figure it out. Half my brilliant ideas would actually work if I could mess with gravity-
Well, in theory, we could make a gravity well behind the astriod, slow it down, then use anti-gravity fields on it to extract dirt and other wastes from the astriod.
We could then speed it up and send it some where.
new idea- Have you ever seen those rollercoasters that work on magnetics? They're 'pulled' in the principle that a magnet turns on infront of the car, it is pulled by magnetism towards the magnet. The magnet is shut off, and one infront of it is turned on, the car moves towards the new magnetic source, this keeps happening until the car is up to a desired speed. Slowed down with the same principle.
We could do that with Gravity maniplution, turn gravity wells on infront of a solid mass, turn it off as the object is 'pulled' at the source of the gravity, put one further in front of it, turn that off and turn another one on further in front of it, ALWAYS pulling the desired object with it.
Right then, or we could just hit the astriod with nuclear weapons until it slowed down to a speed where it was accesable to us. /shrug

Or you could use magnets on the asteroid, considering some are made of iron. But, the kind of magnets that you put on your refrigerator might be a little weak for something that big So that brings up the problem of making magnets big enough to move an asteroid.

Rollercoasters on electromagnetic 'rails'? Even better; Maglev! Has just broken it's speedrecord again; 502 k/m per hour. ;D
Teej; you cant use magnets on asteroids, it would be the same as if you stood on a cart, and you pull your arm trying to move yourself forwards
Another idea would be to use the solarwind to slow the asteroid down.. though you would need a HUGE sail

But you can move your self in a cart by swinging your arm.
I get what you're saying though, you'd have to secure the magnets on something for them to pull the asteriod,

Needless to say that you'd have to swing your arms real hard ;D Besides that, the cart would only move back and forth
