The elements are make up all physical matter, and they are all interconncted, for example u cannot have fire if there is no Earth or Air!
The Guardians of The Watchtowers that is the direction of the elements, are usually called to a circle when cast. Everyone is a specific element, this is ruled by your Starsign.
Earth[/u] Symbolises: Body and Foundations Direction: North Starsigns: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Colours: Brown, Olive and Green Animals: Cow, Bull, Snakes and Spiders Tools: Pentacle, Salt, Bowl and Stones
Air[/u] Symbolises: Mind itellect and Imagination Direction: East Starsigns: Aquarius, Libra and Gemini Colours: Blue and White Animals: Birds, Especially Eagles and Hawks Tools: Athame, Sword, Incense and Censer
Fire[/u] Symbolises: Will, Strength and Purpose Direction: South Starsigns: Aries, Leo and Sagitarius Colours: Red, Orange and Yellow Animals: Lions, Horses, and Lizards Tools: Candles
Water[/u] Symbolises: Emotions and Intuition Direction: West Starsigns: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces Colours: Blue, Bluey-Green Animals: Sea Serpents, Dolphins, Fish and Seals Tools: Chalice and the Water Bowl

This graph is actually quite accurate and can be used to demonstrate actual Geomantic, Witchcraft and so on derived from Elemental usage. I once heard of this 'fifth element', but it never proved useful for me to find out about it when I do Geomancy.

well like the other 4 elements "spirit" is all around us and a part of us all... however one person feels drawn towards a certain physical element due to either frequent use, starsign, birth parents, etc... but "spirit" is more a part of us all and can be used by everyone as long as they use it properly b/c like other elements if abused it fights back... "spirit" isn't physical unless you consider it to be blood but well I consider that an entirely different "element" unto itself... "spirit" is you and it is not you all at once...(strange I know...) it guides you and helps you with the other elements...like an agate among crystals...helps strengthen the others and has use of it's own... well anywhoz...PLUR

Well, I know spirit is incorperated into Magick, but was never an asset to Geomancy. Spirit isn't necessarilly a component of Earth. Spirit is something the human has, or possibly has, thus not pertaining directly to geo... that's why Geomancy never took up this "fifth element".

heh!... Spirit is very "usefull" (the best word i can think of) in all Magick... It is the fondation of the building we call life... Spirit is NOT just a part of humans, like ppl believe. It isn't just another word that means soul... And "it" is also apart of all life plant and human alike... I find that spirit is more "important" (yet again a better word can probly be used) to me then all the others...

A way to look att elements is that they are all composed of atoms and what not; Fire is the burning of hydrogen (H), Wather is H2O, Earth is formed of a bunch of stuff (like copper, gold, stuff), Wind is air, therefor, it is formed of Oxygen and all the other junk (im french and i dont know then names in english)... So that can also explain why lightning (wich is the negative charges going down to the grown where there are positive charges) isn't an element... And no, i don't consider spirit an element per say, it is more a being/force/essence... ;D

I've been gone way too long... PushPop, first off, Spirit is not physical, therefore not an element. Next, when speaking spiritually, you cannot, or should not if you practice this sort of thing, be compeled by associating scientific matters with spiritual ones. I leanred that the hard way....
I'm a very scientific person, but to get away and do whatever it is I do when it comes to this, I must seperate myself from the science and let my mind roam.

You know... If only physical things can be elements... fire is ***technically*** not an element. Fire is a REACTION. It is not made of atoms. The combustion is energy that goes from one atom to another, causing the atoms to jump off of each other and connect to make new molecules (Oxygen + Carbon (which all living things are made [on earth] = CO², Carbon Dioxide)(molecular replacement)

No matter how microscopic something is, such as an atom, it's still a physical thing. Reguardless of the fact that Water, Air and Fire are not solids, but liquids and gases, they are still comprised of phisical matter. Spirit, on the other hand, has yet to have a molecular structure. Speaking scientifically, spirits are still not even known to exist.
I believe my point still stands, but your point was a good one.

That this element 'Element' in magick is derived from the ancient greek way of thinking, that everything was made out of earth, water, wind or/and fire. This is what they called elements. The actual meaning of the word element is, for example if ye take elementary school, the basic of something. Thus, since the ancient way of thinking was that everything was made out of four elementary things, the actual word 'element' isnt the same as we know the 'elements' (those in the periodic table). The meaning is the same, but the thing it presents isnt.
Conclusion: stop moaning about what's an element or not, cuz it perfectly makes sense. ;D
