Why do people talk to themselves?

Many possible explanations.. From it reduces the feelings of being alone.. To it allows a more clearer way of thinking like talking through things but to yourself.. To the amusing because your the most intelligent person around But when I talk to myself its because it helps me to express my thoughts more clearly to myself.

Exactly. There are two primal reasons why. But the most important one is that it helps you clearly resolve the problem you are dealing with in your head. Though it is a bit weird that you actually tálk, because when you think you 'hear' the same.
The reason I posted this thread is bcuz I watched Cast Away (w. Tom Hanks as only survivor from a planecrash on a deserted island). In this movie he manages to survive solely for 4 years. The only company he has, is a volleyball, on which he painted a face. Then, probably because he's alone, he starts talking to the ball (called Wilson), and Wilson becomes his friend.
So, why do people talk to themselves, or a object which cant talk back (not living), though they dó know they wont get an answer anyway..?

I think that again this is down to the over all feelings of not being alone. Also the feelings that perhaps someone or something understands what you are going through and perhaos help you with your problems in some way.
Personification is a very strong drive in most of us. Most would talk to their pet as if they would understand in detail what you are saying to them.
