I found this today-anyone heard of it?
The alencon spaceman
At around 5 am on June 12th 1790, peasants watched in awe as an enormous metal sphere descended from the sky. The sphere crashed into a hillside and the impact threw up vegetation and soil that showered the hillside. The hull of the sphere was so hot (possibly because of an engine or possibly because of rapid descent through the atmosphere) that dry plants nearby caught fire and a grass fire quickly broke out, however the peasants rushed up the hill carrying buckets of water and in a short time the fire was extinguished.
A large crowd gathered to see the sphere and the more adventurous stepped forward and touched the sphere to find that it was warm. A physician, two mayors from nearby towns and a number of other officials came to see what had fallen from the sky and they all arrived to see something amazing.
Some sort of hatch slid open near the base of the sphere and a man in a strange, tight fitting costume stepped through the hatch and surveyed the crowd with an apprehensive look. He stared mumbling in a strange language and signaled for everyone to move away from his craft. A few spectators stepped back and the man ran through the gap in the circle and into some nearby woods. Several of the spectators sensed something bad was going to happen and ran after the oddly dressed man and the rest of the crowd followed suit. Seconds after the last spectator had retreated from the sphere it exploded, creating a small mushroom cloud and throwing debris across the hillside, which “sizzled” in the grass before eventually turning to powder.
A police inspector called Liabeuf traveled over 100 miles from Paris to investigate the crash and questioned many of the witnesses including the two mayors and the physician who had been present to witness the strange occurrence. Liabeuf organized a thorough search of the woods to try and find the oddly dressed man but the hunt found nothing.
In the report to his superiors, Liabeuf suggested the oddly dressed man was “a being from another world” but the authorities at Paris dismissed the suggestion as “a ludicrous idea”
