Australian inventors say they will soon be looking for volunteers to start human trials of a 'bionic eye'.
The device consists of a silicon chip inserted into the eyeball and a pair of 'camera glasses' worn by users.
Images from the glasses are broken down into pixels and passed to the tiny chip, which acts like a retina.
The chip simulates the images and transmits a message to the retinal cells along a series of small wires.
ABC reports tests on animals have been successful and designer Gregg Suaning now wants to begin trials on a group of about five human volunteers.
It says volunteers must be profoundly blind as people with partial sight will be excluded because of the potential risk of visual damage.
Mr Suaning, of Australia's University of Newcastle, has been working on the project for five years. He said: "The principle of a bionic eye is very similar to that of the bionic ear. It is a silicon chip which decodes the radio signals and delivers simulations.
"The chip sends message to the retinal cells through small wires. We broadcast basically into the body. It's like a radio station that only has a range of 25 millimetres."
A separate processing unit makes 'sense' of the camera images by looking for certain features, such as doorways of light. Current technology means the unit is only able to send 10x10 pixel images, but Mr Suaning hopes this will improve with time.

yeah at first but after a while it should be made a common thing

such a thing already exists some way; there's this man who's also blind, got a jackplug plugged into his head (in its skull directly attached to his brain) and bcuz of the signals transmitted by a computer, his brain can receive 'images' build of lil dots.. aprox. 5x5 pixels.. Tho the idea is a bit the same, this bionic eyeball would be way more sophisticated once fully working.

that depends how yer brain interpretates the signals.. they only send electric signals.. soo....

sooo? no color in electricity? is that whatchyar sayin?

No.. I said that it depends on yer brains how they interpret the signals..

i think im finally begining to understand you... ;D

Color cannot be generated ONLY by electricity.. it has to have some kinda chemical component which can glow/radiate etc. due to electricityflow.
And I didnt say 'go look it up'.. I said more something like 'think' ;D

all we see is electromagnetic energy so i think that electrodes should be able to make us see things using that

yeah.. and whats that whats inside an electrode? METAL. (or wolfram) and why does it emit light? cuz electricity runs trhu it thát much that it starts glowing.

they're gonna make the electrodes emit light? what good will that do? aint the dude blind?? i thought they were gonna send electricity into his brain

That depends on what kinda electrode you use. DUH ofcourse they're not gonna place lil lightbulbs for a blind person's eyes..sheesh.
