EMF detectors are one of the most valuable tools for a ghost hunter. Pretty much considered mandatory for any ghost hunt, EMF detectors measure electro-magnetic fields that are in the area. Ghosts can cause what are called "hot spots" which is where there is a strong electro-magnetic field in an area. The detectors pick up on these fields which can mean a ghost is nearby.
There are things that can throw the EMF detectors off. If there is a strong electrical generator nearby it can throw your measurements off drastically. Or if you buy a cheap one it can pick up fields when none are present.

I've heard of that...
Here in canada, we have this show called "Scariest places on earth" and it's where people go to places that are known to be haunted..and they've used this EMF detector...

EMF works best in combination with other tools.. on its own its not that reliable

Yeah, that's what I meant by the part about things that can throw an EMF detector off.

Actually EMF Detectors aren't that big a tool in Investigations as they're so badly affected by so many outlying things.
But most people like to think they're a big part of "Ghost Hunting" because for a lot of Amateur groups they're probably one of the most expensive bits of equipment that can be easily gotten hold of...
But that's just my opinion!

I think it depends on what kind of evidence you're looking for...
For example if you want photo Evidence, then the best equipment you can have is to camera's synchronised to take pics at different angles but in the same direction and taking pics at exactly the same time as each other. That way if an anomaly shows up, you'll have two camera's, therefore two photo's from different angles to back it up.
If you want EVP then you will obviousely need sound recording equipment most of all... The best kind is a full size analogue tape recorder with external omni-directional microphone and some great software to run it through to get rid of the background noise...
As you can see and as I said, it really does depend on what you're trying to get!
Our Investigative Team tries to get Video, Photo, Sound and Temperature evidence. So I can advise on any of these ones, however I'm not really into technical lingo so if you want to know more you'll have to bare with me!
