School for Witches

Europe's first school for witches and wizards has opened in Austria.

Students can take a six-semester course, including learning to make potions and cast spells, ending in a "sorcerers' diploma."

The school is located in the mountains of Klagenfurt in southern Austria.

"Wizardry is very close to nature and is in no way a form of religion," said school director Andreas Starchel, who also calls himself Dakaneth.

"The school's aim is to pass on witches' and wizards' ancestral knowledge, which is gradually being forgotten," says the school's website.

The school caters for three classes of students. This year up to 15 sorcerers' apprentices will be taught astrology, magic, history of magic, meditation and divination and later put their theoretical studies into practice: preparing potions, making talismans and performing rituals.

Having completed a final examination and a dissertation, the student witches and wizards receive a "veneficus certificate" to mark their qualification.

A spokesman added: "In the past, witches and wizards were people recognised by society, who used their divining powers and learning to mediate between the visible and invisible worlds.

"Etymologically, 'witch' means someone who is on the border between our world and the beyond," he added, saying the aim of the courses was "to restore contact with nature, which has been lost by our society."

That means that Celtic and druidic learning and nature studies play a large part in Starchel's teachings.
Stories of the legendary Lord Voldemort and classes in Defence Against the Dark Arts featured in JK Rowling's Harry Potter books do not.

Hmmm...this school doesn't sound half bad. I'd go if I could.. I must admit though, it does remind me of Harry Potter...but I can't help it.. it's my imagination and such!

Sounds nifty......... but I imagine all the Traditionalists might be against it. Who knows........a good idea though.

i used to go to a school that was strictly for "gifted" individuals. there were all sorts of things to be taught; geomancy, foresight...things like that. i think it's a great idea to have schools like this around.

They always are Raven. But that isn't surprising. Be a little different...and you are considered not only an outsider, but evil as well. It is stupid, but the way of the majority of the world. They follow the same paths of old to feel safe.

The school sounds cool. A deffinete visit/tour if not attendance, at the least.

great idea but i give it about year before some bastard christian extremist fuck it up and try to bomb/boycott the school into nonexistence

we had a huge lawsuit a few years ago over all of that. luckily, we won! the future is changing, people should too. in my eyes, it's a good thing to have schools like these otherwise, gifted people are descriminated against for being able to understand things just a bit better and see things in a different light.

Shadow, I entirely agree with you. The world does need changement. And I am glad it is finally coming that way. Schools like these will make children want to learn more, want the knowledge.. and will work harder at getting those gifts to open up.. or so that is how I see it..

Dadj, I understand your feelings. And these extremist that take their relegious faith to such a degree anger me as much.

And there is a part of me that wants to show them just as much disrespect they have shown to myself and others in the past. But overstep that and show them respect please..

I hope that you are wrong though. I hope that this school will stay as it opened. And not let relegion fanaticism control and shape it's future.

Klagenfurt and surroundings is located in Karinthië.. which is the most religious and right-wing part of Austria. So since those people agreed to the school picked its location there, and therefor I think that would mean those people there dont boycott this school or somethin..

It probably will stay open. It is a new way of learning. If they came this far with it.. without major obstacles, I doubt anything else such as religions will stop them.
