Chillingham Castle
The castle was made during the 14th century. It is a four towered building constructed around an old pele tower. De Gray, a Normandy noble built the original after the Norman Conquest. 100 years later Chillingham was granted a Royal License to expand.
By the 17th century the castle was subjected to a number of battles. The dungeons often held inmates captured during battles.
In 1933 the castle was abandoned due to running costs. The Grey family moved to a smaller house. Sir Humphrey Wakefield and Lady Mary Grey have recently restored it.
One of the most famous ghosts of the castle is the Radiant Boy. He begins to cry and moan in agony or feat at the stroke of midnight. It is centered in the Pink Room. After the wailing stops, a halo of light appears around the four-post bed. Anybody sleeping in the bed would see a figure of a young boy dressed in blue slowly approaching him or her. The bones of a young boy and fragments of blue clothing were discovered in a Pink Room wall. No sightings of the Radiant Boy have occurred since.
Lady Mary Berkley, the wife of Lord Grey of Wark and Chillingham, has been seen wandering the corridors looking for her husband that ran away with her sister. Visitors hear the rustle of an old fashioned dress or a chill as if Lady Mary has walked by.
The Tankersville’s children and their Nurse saw a ghost that would step out of a portrait frame. The family friend saw something happen to a different portrait of the same woman.
The silver store/inner pantry is haunted by a white figure. A footman was safeguarding the silver. He awoke to see a lady in white that asked for water. The man turned to get water and then realized that the door was locked and nobody could have gotten in. He turned around again and the woman was gone.
Voices can be heard in the library but no one is there. Phantom funerals can be seen walking through the Topiary Garden.
Many skeletons have been found in the castle. During restoration, a skeleton of a man and child were found close to a trap door. Some workmen discovered in the lower dungeons of the castle a perfectly preserved figure of a man sitting in a char. As the air rushed in, the body crumbled leaving no trace.
